6 Feet USB Firewire Cable, USB to Firewire IEEE 1394 4Pin iLink Adapter Cord Cable for Sony DCR-TRV75E DV
$ 3.38
Obtained this to see if it works and how well between much newer and one older laptops and my Sony DCR-TRV75E camera. Cable appears well constructed and well shielded 6’ (1.8 m) cable. At one end is the FireWire/iLink cable, at the other is a standard USB-A 2.0 connector. I tested the cable functionality between the camera and a newer higher end heavily modded Windows gaming laptop and a much older less capable Dell that still runs Windows XP.Keep in mind the camera itself and “required” drivers and software were originally designed to work with Windows Me and similar era Mac computers that weren’t especially portable, at a time when PnP was very new and meant Windows needed internet access to download everything required. Today the cable really is PnP. However, I was only able to transfer files (image/video) between the camera and the Windows laptop. Transfer speeds for still images being batch transferred was much slower than a single video file of the same total size, which is slower than my external SATA drives connected to a USB port via a caddy (roughly 480 Mbps). Still, at this price point and VERY specific use, it is an excellent value for getting old content from the memory sticks for this device into my Windows laptop for editing and storage onto much newer drives.The same functionality on my considerably older Dell Studio 17 laptop running the latest version of UbuntuStudio (Linux) was equal to my much newer laptop, and on par with the more direct FireWire (both ends) connection as far as file transfers go. I did search and inquire about apps that would allow more functionality on the Ubuntu machine, but was unable to find anything. People were amazed that the camera and laptop still function at all, which gives you some idea how old these two are, and the very specialized use for this cable.As a data transfer cable that works with Ubuntu and Windows and this specific camera, you should note the specific compatibility and application of this cable. Both OSs see the camera as a storage device rather than a cable. Otherwise it is as PnP as can be, which is much easier than when the camera first hit the market.Given the claims in the description that this will NOT work with other FireWire devices (of which I still have quite a few in storage), the cable was not tested with anything else and should be considered incompatible as claimed with any other use.RECOMMEND, but ONLY FOR THIS CAMERA!
