Description Turnera diffusa, known as Damiana, is a sub-tropical shrub native to Mexico, Central and South America. It grows to 1.5 metres in height with a 1 metre span. Turnera diffusa produces a mass of small yellow flowers and aromatic small narrow leaves with serrated edges. Damiana contains several active compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, and caffeine. These compounds contribute to its stimulating and relaxing effects. The leaves of the Turnera diffusa (Damiana) plant have traditionally been used as a tea and an incense by native Central and South Americans for its stimulating effects and as an aphrodisiac. Damiana is used differently in men than women. It’s thought to increase sexual arousal and stamina in men, while in women, it is used to regulate menstruation and help with menopause symptoms. Damiana may assist to relieve anxiety, stress, and mild depression. The plant’s leaves are often brewed into a tea for this purpose. Damiana is also used to ease digestive issues, such as constipation and bloating. In traditional medicine, it has been used to alleviate menstrual discomfort and balance hormones. Damiana is an ingredient in a traditional Mexican liqueur, which is sometimes used in lieu of triple sec in margaritas. Mexican folklore claims that it was used in the “original” margarita.
